GROWING TIPS
Lettuce is an ideal cool weather crop enjoyed through the spring and fall. (Plant every 2 weeks for continuous harvests throughout the growing season.) Select a sunny location, cultivate and fertilize the soil. Sow seeds 1/4" deep in moist, well-drained soil; and firm slightly after planting. Make sure to allow enough space between seeds for lettuce to grow (overcrowding can cause leaves to have a bitter taste.) Water lightly and regularly; and protect from pests.
Don't wait to harvest! Over mature lettuce can be bitter and woody so harvest promptly when ready.
Enjoy more lettuce... When harvesting, remove just the outer leaves, or cut the plant about an inch about the soil surface, and you can often enjoy a second harvest.
Wit & Wisdom: Eating lettuce for dinner can be calming and help to reduce stress. Read The Old Farmer's Almanac Lettuce Growing Guide!
