DESCRIPTION

Introduced in 1892 Detroit Dark Red Beets are the quintessential American beet with striking, dark-red globes, succulent flesh infused with sweet flavors; and delicious deep green tops. Premium, non-GMO, heirloom Detroit Dark Red Beet Seeds from The Old Farmer's Almanac have high germination rates and are proudly sourced from American farms.

Freshly Packed: These seeds are packed for the current growing season and will provide high germination rates next year as well.

Premium Packaging: All seeds from The Old Farmer’s Almanac are packaged in individually styled packets ideal for gifts, storage or immediate use. Each packet displays the flower, vegetable, plant or herb variety on the front with instructions and plant facts on the back.

Beets are a cool weather crop best sown directly in early spring, after the danger of frost has passed, or in early fall. They are sensitive to acidic soils and prefer a pH of 6.0-7.0. Plant 3-4 seeds 1/2" deep and 1-2" apart in fertile, organically rich, well-drained soil. Keep the soil moist for the first 21 days. Once true leaves are established, thin back to 1 plant every 2-3". After 45-55 days, beets should be 2-3" wide; but they can be harvested earlier if “baby” beets are preferred.

Enjoy more beets... Sow beets every 2-3 weeks for continued harvests throughout the season.

Don't throw away the tops! Detroit Dark Red Beets have scarlet stems and deep green tops that taste delicious; and can be cooked and enjoyed like spinach or swiss chard.

Wit & Wisdom: Beets have long been considered an aphrodisiac: Ancient Greeks thought that Aphrodite, their goddess of love, used them to enhance her appeal. Read The Old Farmer's Almanac Beets Growing Guide!
